and this is why we go to school

i borrowed this tidbit from my friend marlon who posted it in his blog... mr ginott definitely has a point here

Dear Teacher,

I am a survivor of a concentration camp. My eyes saw what no man should witness: gas chambers built by learned engineers; children poisoned by educated physicians; infants killed by trained nurses; women and babies shot and burned by high school and college graduates. So I am suspicious of education.
My request is: help your students become more human. Your efforts must never produce learned monsters, skilled psychopaths, educated Eichmanns.
Reading, writng and arithmetic are important only if they serve to make our children more humane.

a 233-page book sans verbs?

michel thaler, a french author, has claimed to have written the first ever novel without any verb at all. even in french, the language in which the novel was written, the concept of even a sentence with no verbs seems like something exhaustingly boring or senseless. le train de nulle part (published last year) is something i'll be waiting for.

below is an exerpt from the book, translated into english:

"lengthy passages filled with florid adjectives in a series of vitriolic portraits of dislikable passengers on a train."

my fave song for the tag-ulan

it's actually a japanese attempt at reggae, and i must admit: it's pretty cool, and the message is nice. anyway, for those who are interested, here are the lyrics (note that your browser must have a japanese font installed [at least MS Mincho] in order to read this).

pleace teache me inglishi

please teach me english is a movie i recommend to those who want to understand a bit more why koreans are almost (excuse the term) desperate to learn english.

the experiences i've had helping them in particular learn english has been definitely rewarding, you know. i thought that they were... different. i don't know why.... it might be xenophobia. it's opened my mind - i can't exactly explain how - and has given volume to what i define as friendship.

anyways, the movie is sure as heck wacky but not overly done. there's a lot of graphical modifications to give the movie some humoristic spice, and you could tell that director kim sung soo spend quite a lot of money in the production. most of the situations are identifiable, although there are a couple of scenes that don't really happen that often in real life, i.e. those romantic cliché scenes; but in my opinion the movie eventually becomes so fun that you won't even care. it helps describe the korean's obession with english (although with a shade of korean patriotism), more out of what many define as a "necessity", but the movie has romance infused into it as well, so.... a lot of laughs await this movie's viewers so beware.

duration: 1 hr 50 min
language: english and korean (with subtitles)

she will be loved - maroon5

i love this song grabeh... my favorite line is in bold...

Lyrics:

Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else
I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I've had you so many times but somehow
I want more

Chorus:

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
She will be loved

Tap on my window knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
I know I tend to get insecure
It doesn't matter anymore
It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along
My heart is full and my door's always open
You can come anytime you want

Chorus:

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
She will be loved

(...tried so hard to say goodbye)
